Boroondara Cemetery Buzzes Back to Life with New Beehive Program

April 28, 2026

Boroondara Cemetery is partnering with local amateur apiarists to re-establish its much-loved beehive program.

Early this year, the cemetery's old, abandoned hive was inspected and new hives — complete with a queen — were introduced to revive what was once a thriving bee colony. With an abundance of flowers and native flora throughout the cemetery grounds, the program is well placed to produce its first honey harvest by spring. Subject to sufficient yields, the team hopes to share this local honey with the community — both local residents and visitors.

The program also aims to inspire others to start their own urban beehives, fostering a broader culture of backyard apiculture across the local area.

The hives are currently located on the Parkhill Road side of the cemetery, near the side entrance. Guided tours will soon be available, giving visitors a firsthand look at what's involved in caring for urban bees and supporting this growing initiative. Signage will also be installed shortly to help direct people to the hive locations.

Boroondara Cemetery is fortunate to host a remarkably healthy and diverse ecosystem within its grounds — an ideal environment for bees to thrive. Ongoing hive management will be essential to monitor for the destructive Varroa mite, should it ever be detected, and to ensure the colony remains active, healthy and buzzing.
