How much does a burial plot cost in Melbourne?
The cost of a burial plot varies widely between Melbourne cemeteries, depending on the location, the type of grave, how many people it holds, and whether the right is perpetual or for a set term. In Victoria, you don't buy the land itself. You buy a right of interment: the right to decide who is buried there and what memorial is placed on it.
When you compare prices, check what's included. The total cost of a burial is usually made up of the right of interment, the interment fee on the day, a headstone or plaque, and the funeral director's fees. Our funeral planning guide explains each of these step by step.
At Boroondara, a grave site in our historic grounds is $97,655 for a perpetual right of interment, with new sites limited in one of Melbourne's oldest garden cemeteries, established in 1859. Memorials for ashes start from $790.

A perpetual right means the position is yours forever. A 25 year tenure secures it for 25 years, and costs less upfront. When the tenure ends, your family can renew it for another 25 years or convert it to a perpetual right.
We'll contact the holder before the tenure ends. You can renew it for another 25 years or convert it to a perpetual right, and the current renewal prices are listed above.
The prices above are for the position itself. For mausoleum and niche wall positions, the first placement of ashes is included. Other interment fees, plaques and headstones are charged separately, and our team can give you a full breakdown of costs before you decide. Headstones are arranged directly with a stonemason (we can give you a list) and approved by us before they're installed. Plaques are organised through us.
